Denis Santos

Research Engineer

Systems Engineering

Denis Santos, PhD, has been a Research Engineer of the Nanodevices group since 2023. His research is focused on the design, microfabrication and characterization of sensors/biosensors for the detection and monitoring of gases/parameters/biomarkers in complex matrices with applications ranging from biomedical to energy storage systems.

Denis received his Engineering degree in Electronics and his MSc in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He was then a Research Fellow for six years at CERN – European Organization for Nuclear Research, Geneva, Switzerland, working in the Hadronic Calorimeter of the ATLAS particles detector. He later received his PhD in Bioengineering from the MIT Portugal Program at the Instituto Superior Técnico and INESC-Microsystems and Nanotechnologies, Lisbon, Portugal. His PhD research was focused on the design and microfabrication of multi-modal biosensors and their integration in microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip platforms. He first joined INL as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in 2018. Denis has authored several publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, including IEEE Sensors, Sensors and Actuators B and Biosensors and Bioelectronics.
