Nanoelectronics Non-precious earth-abundant electrocatalysts for hydrogen/oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction reactions

Hydrogen/oxygen evolution (HER/OER) and oxygen reduction (ORR) are important half-cell reactions in many electrochemical devices such as photoelectrochemical cells (PEC) and fuel cells. Pt-group metals are thus far the most efficient and commonly used catalysts for these reactions. However, for large-scale deployment of PEC cells and widespread use of fuel cells, it is apparently impractical to use Pt-group metals to catalyze these reactions because of the high cost and the scarcity of Pt. The project is aiming at developing non-precious earth-abundant catalysts for use as an alternative to Pt. Presently, the research is focused on the development of nanostructured transition metal oxides and sulfides.
