Joana Carvalho is a PhD student on Innovation in Food Safety and Technology at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain),  which is based on her current work at INL for developing a micro Total Analysis System (µTAS) for food and environmental samples. She graduated with an Integrated Master’s Degree in Biological Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon (Portugal) in 2015. Her M.Sc. Thesis focused on the development and optimization of a DNA extraction protocol through microscale solid phase extraction (µSPE) and microfluidics for food analysis applications and was done at INL under the supervision of Doctor Marta Prado and Professor Susana Cardoso Freitas.

Joana is currently working on a R&D project on Molecular Biology for food and environmental analysis. Her work at INL is integrated in the Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadalquivir (CHG) Project for the development of a system for early detection of Zebra Mussel on river basins through analysis of environmental DNA.
