MI3S
MI3S - Sensorized and Sustainable Solar Waterproof Membrane

The MI3S project aims to develop an integrated solution that combines roof waterproofing with solar energy generation, through flexible photovoltaic modules embedded in a waterproofing membrane, complemented by a continuous monitoring system.
This approach brings together, in a single system, waterproofing, energy generation, ease of installation, and high durability, contributing to more efficient and sustainable buildings.
The project results from collaboration between scientific and business entities, within a multidisciplinary consortium that includes CeNTI, INL, ISEP, and Prudêncio Impermeabilizações.
The project has a duration of 36 months and is organized into the following activities:
A1 – Technology Watch and Preliminary Studies
State-of-the-art analysis, benchmarking of existing solutions, and material selection.
A2 – Development of the Flexible Solar Module
Development of ultra-thin solar cells based on CIGS technology, with a conversion efficiency of around 12%.
A3 – Development of the Integration Process
Study of solutions that enable the integration of different components into the final product, ensuring material compatibility and functional performance.
A4 – Monitoring Systems
Development of sensors to monitor parameters such as humidity, temperature, and roughness, allowing tracking of the condition and evolution of the modules over time.
A5 – Prototyping and Validation
Development of an integrated system, validation in a real environment, and assessment of technical, economic, and environmental feasibility.
A6 – Dissemination and Exploitation
Dissemination of results, promotion of technology transfer, and protection of intellectual property.
A7 – Coordination and Management
Technical, financial, and organizational monitoring of the project.
Expected Results
The project aims to develop an innovative system that integrates:
- Waterproofing membranes with energy generation capability
- Flexible solar modules based on CIGS technology
- Sensors for continuous monitoring of performance and durability
