Test strips for biomarker screening of venous thromboembolism in oncology

Strip2SENSE aims to create an innovative point-of-care diagnostic device to assess cancer patients for risk of developing venous thromboembolism. The major breakthrough is to develop a low cost, fast and accurate diagnosis method based on sustainable test strips. Increased levels of certain biomarkers in urine owing to activation of blood coagulation can be non-invasively determined using this miniaturized technology. The test strips fabricated with natural polymers and integrating microfluidics merge the selective recognition of biomimetic plastic antibodies tailored in photonic polymers for sensitive self-reporting optical signals (colour change) generated on-site. Biomimetic sensing strips are attainable by using cutting-edge fabrication techniques. The improved sensitivity and accuracy in real-time analyses shall be validated in laboratory setting. The technology is anticipated to have successful clinical translation in managing cancerassociated venous thromboembolism.
