CURRENT OUTLOOK
The number of people infected by COVID-19 in Portugal rose to 41,646, another 457 in the last 24 hours, according to the epidemiological report released by the Portuguese General Directorate of Health (DGS).
The data also reveals the occurrence of three deaths from yesterday, bringing the total number of fatalities from the new coronavirus to 1,564 in the country.
A new group of 202 recovered people was also recorded, increasing the number of people recovered from the new coronavirus to 27,066.
PANDEMIC IN PORTUGAL
The increase in COVID-19 cases in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region has led health professionals to ask for a more coordinated response to the outbreak. Amadora-Sintra and Loures hospitals have been under pressure for several weeks.
To reinforce this control, fines came into force yesterday for those who do not comply with the rules defined by the Government for the various phases of confinement.
PSD President Rui Rio said that the Government’s action to control the pandemic has “gone wrong” in recent weeks in the Lisbon region.
PANDEMIC IN EUROPE AND THE WORLD
The European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen announced yesterday that the campaign to combat the COVID-19 pandemic has raised an additional 6.15 billion euros. The goal is to finance treatments, tests, and a vaccine globally.
A team of Spanish virologists found traces of the new coronavirus in a sample of wastewater collected in Barcelona in March 2019, nine months before the first case of COVID-19 in China was identified.
In six months of the pandemic, nearly half a million people worldwide died. The number of infections has already exceeded ten million, but more than half have recovered.
The US has surpassed the 2.5 million COVID-19 cases, according to the count advanced by Johns Hopkins University.
Mexico, on the other hand, registers 602 more, bringing the total number of deaths to 26,000.
China has diagnosed 17 new cases, 14 in Beijing, Chinese officials announced.
Russia recorded 104 more deaths and 6,791 newly infected, bringing the total death toll to 9,073 and remaining the third country in the world with the most cases, officials announced.
The death toll in Africa has risen to 9,484 in more than 371,000 cases, according to the most recent data on the continent’s pandemic.
After an outbreak in a nightclub, Switzerland placed 300 people in quarantine.
MEDICAL PROGRESS
Brazil will produce an experimental vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca against COVID-19.
There are three new symptoms of COVID-19 that can occur for up to two weeks of infection. Fatigue, muscle pain, tiredness are some of the symptoms included by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention on the official list.
ECONOMIC IMPACT
Only citizens from 15 countries will be able to re-enter the EU space as of July 1st, the date of reopening the borders closed in March to contain the contagion of COVID-19. The USA and Brazil are two of the excluded countries.
The UK will create open-air corridors with a group of European countries on the 6th of July. The Portuguese Secretary of State for Tourism, Rita Marques, stressed that “Portugal is fighting for a place” on this list, which will be released tomorrow.
The member of the Parliament Carlos Pereira has already sustained that Madeira and the Azores must be included in sanitary corridors to help in the economic recovery.
The Brazilian ambassador in Lisbon says that Brazil wants to reconnect politically and strengthen economic relations with Portugal, a country that maybe the “base for Brazilian production to enter Europe,” passing through Sines port.
