CURRENT OUTLOOK
The Portuguese General Directorate of Health (DGS) daily epidemiological bulletin published today registers 6 more deaths and 291 cases of infection with COVID-19 in Portugal in the last 24 hours.
The number of deaths rose from 1,654 to 1,660 and the total number of confirmed cases increased to 46,512.
The number of people recovered is 30,907.
PANDEMIC IN PORTUGAL
Yesterday the DGS corrected the bulletins between 30 June and 10 July and increased the number of cases in the region of Lisbon and Tagus Valley by 200. This is because a private laboratory partner did not report any test results for three days.
The 19 parishes in the municipalities of Lisbon, Amadora, Sintra, Loures, and Odivelas are expected to continue in a calamity situation.
Experts expect a significant increase in cases starting in October, about three weeks after the new school year begins.
Besides, Portugal is at risk of failing to respond to a resurgence of COVID-19 cases in winter, said public health doctor Ricardo Mexia, considering that the country cannot reach this point as it is today.
The Monitoring Committee for the National Response in Intensive Care Medicine for COVID-19 today proposed a 46% increase in capacity by 2021, which implies an investment of 32 million euros.
The South Regional Section of the Portuguese Guild of Nurses warned of the possibility of situations similar to the one in Reguengos de Monsaraz to be repeated if nursing homes continue to work with “resources below the minimum required”.
In the same case, the Portuguese Guild of Medical Doctors announced the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry to assess all clinical circumstances related to the Reguengos de Monsaraz outbreak.
This week, the Stay Away COVID app pilot project kicks off, with “a few thousand participants”, all of the volunteers.
PANDEMIC IN EUROPE AND THE WORLD
Mexico wants to demand restrictions on the entry of people from the United States due to the acceleration of the pandemic in that country, which has exceeded three million infections.
In the last 24 hours alone, the US has registered 66,261 cases of COVID-19, a new daily high in the country.
Still, on the American continent, Brazil reported 1,071 deaths and 39,023 infected by the new coronavirus in the last 24 hours, and a possible relationship of 3,974 deaths with the disease is still being investigated.

On the African continent, the death toll rose yesterday to 12,756, plus 313, in about 559,000 cases.
Worldwide, the pandemic has killed 561,551 people and has infected nearly 12.6 million since December, according to the latest AFP news agency report.
MEDICAL PROGRESS
COVID-19 cases have doubled worldwide in less than two months and the WHO wants more research into how the virus is transmitted. In particular, the organization wants to know how long the virus stays in the air and on the surfaces, capable of reaching the human being and cause a new infection.
India, the third country with the highest number of infected people in the world, wants to have a vaccine against COVID-19 ready by August 15th, a decision that is being criticized by health experts.
ECONOMIC IMPACT
