Alpuim Group

The Alpuim Group focuses on platforms and device technologies based on two-dimensional (2D) materials.

Graphene liquid-gate field-effect transistor (FET) platforms and functionalised 2D channels are developed for biomarker detection, immuno-assays, and DNA sensing. Specificity is achieved via controlled functionalisation of the graphene channel, enabling high sensitivity and wide dynamic range. Multiplexed graphene transistor platforms and dedicated high-speed electronics are developed for brain activity recording of key neurotransmitters (dopamine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamate) with physiological spatiotemporal resolution. CMOS heterogeneous integration is under development in collaboration with Fraunhofer-IZM (Berlin) within the Chips JU program.

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth, transfer methodologies, and cleanroom-based device fabrication of 2D materials are advanced, supported by elemental, structural, and spectroscopic characterisation. In parallel, scalable liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) approaches are developed to produce 2D materials-based inks, pastes, and slurries compatible with inkjet, screen printing, and spray coating for low-cost and large-area device fabrication. Applications under development include electromagnetic shielding coatings, membranes for efficient liquid filtration, and energy harvesting systems based on transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs).

Research activities also include memristive devices for memory and neuromorphic applications based on layered semiconductors and van der Waals heterostructures. Additional activities include defect-engineered quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), and exploratory directions in twistronics and topological insulators.
