National Mourning Day in Portugal – 19 April 2022

INL associates with the National Mourning Day declared by the Government of Portugal, one of the INL member-states, for the passing away of Eunice Muñoz, one of the most distinguished actresses in the country.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Portuguese President, paid an “emotional tribute” to the actress, thanking her for “unforgettable decades”, on behalf of all Portuguese people. “On behalf of all Portuguese people, I would like to thank you for a life dedicated to theatre, but also to cinema, television and culture in Portugal. A life dedicated to the Portuguese. We have not forgotten her, we will never forget her, she will always be in our hearts”, he added

Considered one of the best Portuguese actresses of all time, Eunice Muñoz, born on July 30, 1928, in Amareleja, Alentejo, came from a family of mummers with roots in the circus. She debuted on stage at the age of five, singing “Uma Porta e Uma Janela”. But it was at the age of 13 that she arrived at the D. Maria II National Theater, where Rey Colaço/Robles Monteiro Company was based. Her debut play was called “Vendaval”, by Virgínia Vitorino and her talent is immediately recognized and admired.

 Eunice Muñoz died on April 15th 2022, at the age of 93 years old.
