INL Becomes an Official Member of the Technology Council for Advanced Materials

December 10, 2024

The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) is proud to announce its participation as an official member of the Technology Council for Advanced Materials, following its inaugural meeting on Friday, 15 November 2024. It is represented by its Director General, Prof. Dr. Clivia M. Sotomayor Torres. The Advanced Materials Initiative is a significant milestone towards a united effort by the European Union, Member States, industry, and research organization to strategically address the present and future industry needs for advanced materials in Europe.

The Council’s mission is to position Europe as a global leader in advanced materials research, fast-track innovations to the Single Market, and drive industrial adoption. This aligns with the EU’s strategic priorities, including the Green Deal, sustainability, and enhanced industrial competitiveness.

A Unified Vision for Advanced Materials Leadership

As an official member, INL joins 52 high-level representatives, including 27 from Member States and 19 from academia, research and technology organisations, industry, and associations. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to building a robust and inclusive advanced materials ecosystem that integrates science and innovation with industrial applications.

The meeting, co-chaired by Ms. Maria Cristina Russo (Director of DG RTD), Amaryllis Verhoeven (Acting Director of DG GROW), and László Lengyel (Vice President for Science and International Affairs, Hungarian National Research, Development and Innovation Office), emphasized collaborative strategies to achieve the objectives outlined in the EU’s Communication on Advanced Materials for Industrial Leadership.

INL’s Role and Strategic Focus

As an active player in the advanced materials sector, INL leverages its world-class facilities and expertise to drive innovation and foster collaboration. INL focus on advanced materials, in a transversal manner, is based the science and engineering, in particular in materials for Energy and the Environment, Personalised Health and Food and Information and Communication Technologies. This strategy ensures INL’s contribution to groundbreaking research and its alignment with the European  Council’s objectives.

By exploring uncharted scientific territories and bridging the gap between research and industry, INL strengthens its position as a leader in the global advanced materials landscape while addressing critical societal challenges.

About the Technology Council

The Technology Council for Advanced Materials is a strategic initiative established by the European Commission to unify efforts across Member States, academia, and industry. It serves as a vital platform to:

+ Align research priorities with industrial needs.

+ Integrate advanced materials innovation into real-world applications.

+ Drive sustainable and competitive growth within Europe.

The Technology Council will meet once or twice a year, with continuous engagement between sessions. The outcomes of these meetings will be shared on a dedicated website early next year.
