António Lobo Antunes (1942–2026): A Literary Legacy That Transcends Borders
March 6, 2026
The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory expresses its condolences on the passing of António Lobo Antunes, one of the most influential authors in contemporary Portuguese literature.
Internationally renowned for his literary style, Lobo Antunes has carved out a unique voice within the cultural ecosystem, becoming one of the leading figures in Portuguese culture with a career spanning more than 40 years. His work reflects the cultural maturation of the Portuguese social and historical context in the 20th century, echoing his background as a psychiatrist and war veteran.
In addition to writing more than 30 novels, which have been translated into several languages, António Lobo Antunes received the Camões Prize in 2007 – one of the most prestigious literary awards in the Portuguese language. The incisiveness of his writing and the disruptive dimension of his artistic work are also of utmost importance to the discussion of narrative conventions.
INL joins the tribute paid by the President of the Republic and by the many voices in Portugal – one of our member states – and around the world who honour his legacy and the lasting mark he leaves on Portuguese culture and literature.
