FoQaCiA Workshop 2025: Advancing the Foundations of Quantum Computation

June 12, 2025

The FoQaCiA Workshop 2025, held in Braga, Portugal, from June 2 to 6, provided a focused environment for graduate students and early-career researchers to engage with current topics in quantum information science. Organised by the FoQaCiA consortium and hosted by the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), the event was designed as both a research meeting and a training opportunity for the next generation of quantum scientists.

The workshop addressed central themes in the FoQaCiA project, which is funded by Horizon Europe, UKRI, and Canada’s NSERC, with the goal of exploring the fundamental principles behind quantum computational advantage. Lectures and discussions covered a range of topics, including contextuality and non-classicality, simulation complexity, arithmetic of quantum circuits, and methods for improving fault tolerance in quantum computing.

With a programme structured to encourage learning and dialogue, the workshop allowed students to interact closely with researchers involved in the project and to explore both conceptual and technical aspects of the field. There were invited and contributed short talks, poster presentations, and tutorial sessions aimed at students and younger researchers joining the field.

By introducing participants to foundational research questions and emerging methods, the FoQaCiA Workshop 2025 contributed to the broader goal of strengthening theoretical understanding in quantum computing, while supporting capacity building in Europe and beyond.
