The Consortium of Hungarian Nanotechnology visited INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory to analyse the collaboration agenda between INL and Hungary and at the same time initiate a cooperation agreement in the field of nanotechnology.

The Hungarian Delegation, accompanied by a representative of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology of Hungary met with the Director General of INL, Lars Montelius, the Deputy Director General and Scientific Director, Paulo Freitas, and several researchers who are developing various projects at INL.

“One of the great advantages of this collaboration relates to the complementarity of laboratories. The sharing of knowledge and scientific instruments have allowed important advances in different research projects”, stressed Paulo Freitas «The collaboration with research institutes from Hungary is a strategic priority for INL», says the Director General of INL, Lars Montelius, who expects to widen the range of the current agreement with Hungary.

During this visit to Braga, the Hungarian Delegation visited the different areas of INL and the High Accuracy Laboratories. They were also able to hear from INL Researchers more information about their work and line of research. The group included government, universities, laboratories and researchers representatives from Hungary.

National Mourning Day in Portugal – 19 April 2022

INL associates with the National Mourning Day declared by the Government of Portugal, one of the INL member-states, for the passing away of Eunice Muñoz, one of the most distinguished actresses in the country.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Portuguese President, paid an “emotional tribute” to the actress, thanking her for “unforgettable decades”, on behalf of all Portuguese people. “On behalf of all Portuguese people, I would like to thank you for a life dedicated to theatre, but also to cinema, television and culture in Portugal. A life dedicated to the Portuguese. We have not forgotten her, we will never forget her, she will always be in our hearts”, he added

Considered one of the best Portuguese actresses of all time, Eunice Muñoz, born on July 30, 1928, in Amareleja, Alentejo, came from a family of mummers with roots in the circus. She debuted on stage at the age of five, singing “Uma Porta e Uma Janela”. But it was at the age of 13 that she arrived at the D. Maria II National Theater, where Rey Colaço/Robles Monteiro Company was based. Her debut play was called “Vendaval”, by Virgínia Vitorino and her talent is immediately recognized and admired.

Eunice Muñoz died on April 15th 2022, at the age of 93 years old.

BioIberoAmerica 2022 presented the latest advances in Biotechnology last week

Last week, April 7-9, marked the return of the BioIberoAmerica Congress. This 3rd initiative was a unique congress that brought together scientists, entrepreneurs, industry, and clinicians, who develop their research and work in the area of Biotechnology.

According to Lorenzo Pastrana, Head Office of INL Research, Technology and Innovation, biotechnology “is one of the main technologies that will change the relationship between people and the environment, how we understand health and how we understand industrial processes. Biotechnology is capable of providing more sustainability to the different processes, and how it is also capable of providing new therapeutic strategies”.

The opening session counted with the participation of Lars Montelius, Director-General of INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, Lorenzo Pastrana, head of INL’s Research, Technology and Innovation Cabinet, José Teixeira, president of the Portuguese Society of Biotechnology and Ricardo Rio, Mayor of Braga.

For Ricardo Rio, Biotechnology is “one of the most important keys” to responding to the current and future challenges of society. And over the last two years, Braga has positioned itself as an international reference, assuming itself as a true capital of innovation in various fields of activity and this recognition must also be a very important path for all those who work in this area of Biotechnology”. Braga “is particularly committed to sustainable development” and available to be “a true living laboratory for new experiences, new concepts and new services that could be developed in the area of biotechnology”.

More than 200 Biotechnologists came to Braga to showcase their work and speak about such different topics as biomedicine and biomaterials, agricultural, marine, food, environmental and industrial biotechnology, molecular biotechnology, systems biology and metabolic engineering, bioreactors, biocatalysis, separation processes, and biosensors, biotechnology, nanobiotechnology, bioinformatics, ethics, and society. These were just a few of the possible areas and applications that the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), University of Minho and researchers from the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America many other partners introduced to all the participants, at Altice Fórum Braga.

INL partners with Native Scientist

INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory partnered with Native Scientist, we continue our commitment to promote fair and quality science education so that everyone can reach their full potential regardless of their background.

Researchers and students now working and developing their research activity at INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory will be able to practice outreach activities in Braga/Portugal through the following program: the ‘Native Schools’ program connects scientists and children with a shared cultural background to talk about science in the scientists’ mother tongue and the children’s heritage language. The interaction happens in structured 90-minute workshops that bring together 4 researchers and 12-25 children. The goal is to broaden the horizons of children, promote scientific literacy, and foster multilingualism. To participate, please fill in this form.

And it will also be possible for researchers and students who attended primary school in Spain or Portugal to through the ‘Cientista Regressa à Escola’ or ‘Científic@ Regresa a la Escuela’ program (website under construction). This unique initiative takes scientists back to their primary school for one day to deliver two hands-on science workshops for students. The goal is to broaden the horizons of children, promote scientific literacy, and improve access to quality science education. To participate, please fill in this form if you attended school in Spain, or this form if you attended schools in Portugal.

Together, we want to inspire future scientists, innovators, and thinkers. We want to teach how scale shapes and influences your life. Join us in this adventure and together we will travel in scale and experience science outside your world because we all love science.
