INL Head of Department appointed Nanotechnology Director within UT-Austin/Portugal Program

Paulo Ferreira, who leads the Advanced Electron Microscopy, Imaging and Spectroscopy at INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, was recently nominated co-Director for the area of Nanotechnology at the University of Texas – Austin / Portugal Program. This initiative, which was renewed for another decade, intends to foster collaboration between Portuguese based research institutions and UT-Austin. This partnership has seen its funding increase three times since the beginning and it addresses knowledge areas where scientists and companies in Portugal will engage with the University and other institutions in Texas in multidisciplinary education, research and technology transfer and commercialization.

Former INL Director-General José Rivas wins “Salvador Velayos” Magnetism Award

As every two years, the Spanish Magnetism Club during its Annual Assembly held last November 30, 2018, at the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Gijon, University of Oviedo, has awarded the prestigious Magnetism Award “Salvador Velayos” to former INL Director-General José Rivas (2005-2014), currently Full Professor of Applied Physics at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. This award is in recognition of the advances, and outstanding work in the field of Magnetism carried out by Spanish scientists and technologists, or foreigners working in Spain. The award ceremony will take place during next Annual Assembly of the Club, scheduled for November 2019 at the University of Pamplona, where José Rivas has been invited to give a lecture on a topic of his free choice.

INL researchers among the top 1% most influential scientists globally

Miguel Cerqueira, a Staff Researcher in the Food Processing Group of INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, appears in the list of the “2018 Highly Cited Researchers in the World”, made by Clarivate Analytics, in the area of Agricultural Sciences. The analysis was conducted between 2006 and 2016. Miguel Cerqueira was a researcher at University of Minho until February 2016, and he joined INL during March 2016. This list takes into account not only the number of scientific articles mentioning a researcher’s name, but also the citations trend, and acknowledges researchers for their exceptional research performance. Nuno Peres, who recently joined INL as Research Group Leader, in parallel with his role of Professor at the University of Minho, is also mentioned in this list of most influential researchers, in the field of Physics. In 2017, Nuno Peres was considered the most influential Portuguese scientist in the world with over 21.000 citations (each article cited 278 times on average).

FODIAC project as a case study at the 5th Global Nanotechnology Congress and Expo

The 5th Global Nanotechnology Congress and Expo are taking place on the 3-5 December in Valencia, Spain. It is a symposium of keynote presentations, Oral talks, Poster presentations, hosting leading scientists from academia and industry worldwide, to discuss the latest developments in the field of Nanotechnology. Many interesting perspectives will be explored throughout the three-days and will be focused on how science and technology of materials from nano to macro level are changing rapidly, providing a scenario of new opportunities and challenges. On the first day, in the framework of the conference, a workshop was led by Lorenzo Pastrana on FODIAC project. The project was brought to the stage as a case study and example of nanotechnology developments in the field of Food. Specifically, Lorenzo will present how applied nanotechnology with complementary disciplines can be used to extract functional bioactive molecules to be integrated into a dietary solution to tackle diabetes and the associated impairment of the cognitive function among the elderly.

INL researchers win NANO.IL.2018 “Best Poster Award”

A team of INL researchers from different groups was awarded the “Best Poster Award” during NANO.IL.2018, the leading international nanotechnology conference in Israel, which gathered over 900 participants from the 9th to the 11th of October, in Jerusalem. The award was handed over to Pedro Alpuim, from INL and University of Minho (Department of Physics), the leader of the research team and group leader of 2D Materials and Devices at INL, representing also Joana Rafaela Guerreiro, Rui Campos (now at the University of Antwerp), Marco Martins, Andrey Ipatov, Fátima Cerqueira and Jérôme Borme. The awarded poster with the title “Lab-on-a-chip platform based on graphene field-effect transistors for DNA sensing” was developed within INL Departments of Quantum & Energy Materials, Nanoelectronics Engineering, Micro and Nanofabrication, and Life Sciences. Lab-on-a-chip systems for the detection of complex diseases are growing in importance, normally requiring the detection of multiple targets in an autonomous and portable fashion. For the creative use of sensors, combining different areas of expertise, INL is in the forefront of new diagnostic tools development, which aims to provide quicker and more accurate information to support a medical decision on the best therapeutics.

INL Researcher awarded with IAAM Scientist Medal

Oleksandr Bondarchuk, INL Facility Manager (PhD) at the Department of Advanced Electron Microscopy, Imaging and Spectroscopy (AEMIS), received the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM) Scientist Medal, at its 20th Award Ceremony of the European Advanced Materials Congress, recently held in Stockholm, Sweden. The distinction was given to Oleksandr Bondarchuk for his research on “Materials for Electrical Energy Storage: ionic liquid thin films on HOPG and VN surfaces”. The jury considered this work relevant due to the increasing global demand for better alternatives to fossil fuels, leading to research on more effective, affordable and environmentally friendly energy storage technologies, which are one of the main lines of research at INL, proving that nanotechnology plays a relevant role in offering better and more efficient solutions for today’s energy needs while preserving the planet for future generations.

INL research gets Best Poster Award in USA

At the World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion (WCPEC-7) held last month from June 10-15 in Waikoloa, Hawaii, USA, Sascha Sadewasser, INL Principal Investigator of the Laboratory for Nanostructured Solar Cells, presented the most recent results of a collaborative work between his group and the group of Prof. Philip Dale from the University of Luxembourg. The poster presentation with the title “Area-selective electrodeposition of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 micro-islands for micro-concentrator solar cells” was awarded a Best Poster Award by the organizers. The work shows a proof-of-concept demonstration of a photovoltaic technology which is capable of reaching higher power conversion efficiencies with lower materials consumption of the Cu(In,Ga)Se2 absorber layer.

PhD’s students from INL awarded at the 40th International Conference on Environmental & Food Monitoring

INLers Soraia Fernandes and Monisha Elumalai were awarded at the 40th International Conferences on Environmental & Food Monitoring, held this month in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Soraia Fernandes, a PhD student, working with our Nanochemistry and Water Quality Research Groups, won the “Roland W. Frei” Poster Award for “Novel magnetic covalent organic framework composites for the absorption of diarrheic shellfish poisoning toxins.” Monisha Elumalai, a PhD students, working with INL’s Food Quality and Safety Research Group, won the best young researcher oral presentation by the ISEAC-40 organisation for “Early detection of zebra mussel assisted by modified gold nanoparticle amplification”. Congratulations to both, it is with great pride that we testimony INLers achievements!
