Decisions from the first “INL Summit – Scale Travels”

After two days of presentations and parallel sessions filled with interesting discussions the first INL Summit – Scale Travels ended with important decisions and the signing of three cooperation agreements. Soon, INL will initiate the setting up of a new regional coordination body between Galicia and Northern Portugal. The goal is to enable efficient coordination of strategic research and innovation activities among universities, research and technology organisations and regional authorities, including the Municipality of Braga. Company stakeholders and research institutes representatives invited to participate in round table discussion INL agreed to establish a cluster incorporating a novel and innovative methodology to foster the uptake of nanotechnology along the industrial value chains, in order to increase competitiveness and create a new job. On the first day, INL signed three agreements with regional entities, with the purpose to establish close cooperation regarding the promotion, identification, implementation, management and monitoring of actions in the field of nanotechnology and key enabling technologies in the Galician/Northern Region of Portugal.

INL Summit 2015 started

The INL Summit 2015 started with with the participation of many speakers form different areas. All gathered to exploit the relation between society and nanotechnology. During the first day INL signed agreements with regional entities, with the purpose to establish close cooperation regarding the promotion, identification, implementation, management and monitoring of actions in the field of nanotechnology and key enabling technologies in the Galician/Northern Region of Portugal Read more here

INL hosted 78th IUVSTA Workshop

The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory hosted the 78th IUVSTA (International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications) Workshop on “New Horizons in Oxynitride Thin Films: from Synthesis to Applications”. The workshop took place from October 5th to 9th. Read the full programme here

Brazilian Minister of Science visited INL

The Brazilian Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Aldo Rebelo, visited INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory to analyze the collaboration agenda that Brazil has with the INL. The Brazilian delegation, accompanied by Portugal’s Secretary of State for Science, Leonor Parreira, met with the Director General of INL, Lars Montelius, the Deputy Director General and Scientific Director, Paulo Freitas, and Brazilian researchers who are developing various projects in collaboration with scientists at the INL. INL has already received more than 25 Brazilian researchers from research centers dedicated to research at the nanoscale, from the north to the south of Brazil. Most of the ongoing collaborations are the result of the agreement signed between the CAPES (Ministry of Education of Brazil) and INL, following the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Spain, Portugal and Brazil. “One of the great advantages of this collaboration relates to the complementarity of laboratories. INL hosted the SpiniCur Summer School

More than 60 researchers gathered at INL for the SpinIcur Marie Curie Initial Training Network Summer School. The School was dedicated to one aspect of Spintronics – pure spin currents – their generation, detection and how the spin currents interact with the magnetization. International experts and researchers from leading universities and technological companies came to introduce and deepen the participant’s knowledge about the scientific topic and the main methods applied to study spin-polarized currents. INL invites its neighbors

On September 26-27 INL will have its first OPEN HOUSE event. This first time our neighbors living in the parishes Nogueiró-Tenões, São Vitor, Nogueira-Fraião-Lamaçães, and Gualtar are invited to visit INL. These OPEN HOUSE events focus on bringing together science and society. «We want the local community to visit us and find out more about what we do, who we are and how we work» says the director-general of INL, Prof. Lars Montelius. «We will offer guided tours, exhibitions and activities for the young, shedding light on how we create and bring value to society». All participants need to register for the event by September 18 (extended) at their local parish.

From September 7th to 11th 2015 INL will host a Summer School within the SpinIcur Marie Curie Initial Training Network, on spintronics and spin currents, their generation, detection and how the spin currents interact with the magnetization. European Sharc25 project aims to achieve 25 percent efficiency with thin-film solar cells

A new European research project that goes by the name Sharc25 is setting out to make an extremely efficient thin-film solar cell for the next generation of more cost-effective solar modules. Its objective is to achieve up to 25 percent efficiency in thin-film solar cells made by the co-evaporation of copper indium gallium (di)selenide, or CIGS for short. That kind of performance would top the previous best mark by just over three percentage points. The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) in Braga is a partner in this project, which is coordinated by the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW). Altogether, eleven research partners from eight countries are on board. The list of partner also includes EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology), the universities of Luxembourg (LU), Rouen (F), Parma (I) and Aalto (FIN), the IMEC (Interuniversitair Micro-Elektronica Centrum VZW in B), the HZB (Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie in D), Flisom AG (CH), and Manz CIGS Technology GmbH (D). Launched in May, the project will run for 3.5 years and get €4.6 million in EU funding sourced from the research framework program Horizon 2020.
