NNT2018 at INL

From September 18 to the 20 2018 INL will host NNT2018, the 17th International Conference on Nanoimprint and Nanoprint Technologies, the world’s leading symposium on nanoimprint and nanoprint. The date was selected to allow participants at NNT2018 to take part in the MNE 2018. This is the second time that NNT is hosted at INL and by building on the experience gained last time, it will enable us to meet in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. In addition to paper presentations and vendor exhibits of the most recent science & technology advances, NNT2018 will encompass a set of lectures aiming to provide both newcomers and long-standing participants a comprehensive overview of important technological basic concepts of INL, Nanoprinting, as well as an introductory lecture on the important and expanding field of paper electronics. INL-BINA 2nd Workshop – 5th and 6th September 2018

The first INL-BINA workshop was held at Bar-Ilan Institute for Nanotechnology & Advanced Materials (BINA), in Israel, at May 2nd and 3rd 2018, and the highlight was the signature of the Collaboration Agreement to foster cooperation between both research institutions, to entails the exchange of researchers, and to launch the Collaborative Research Call for Projects between both institutions. The 2nd workshop hosted at INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, on September 5th and 6th 2018, was a success and we are glad to announce the selected Collaborative Projects to be supported: – Dr. Laura Rodiguez-Lorenzo and Dr. Adi Solomon for the project “Surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensing platform for multiplexed detection of aromatic pharmaceuticals.” – Dr. Marília Barreiros dos Santos and Prof. Ehud Banin for the project “Innovative antibacterial surfaces for water purification and monitoring technology”. – Dr. João Gaspar and Prof. Zeev Zalevsky for the project “HyperSpectrumMESMS: Realization of MEMS arrays for enhanced photonic sensing”. – Prof. Paulo Ferreira and Prof. David Zitoun for the project “Efficient catalysts for energy storage: tackling failure mechanisms from electron microscopy observation”. Mission 10.000 Call for abstracts

INL Summit 2018 third day will be dedicated to Mission 10.000 – a nanoGateway International Conference. This main conference topic will be Nanotechnology: an enabler for bioeconomy and subjects as agriculture (including forestry sector), water resources and food industry will be discussed thro papers, oral presentations and many other sessions. This Mission is a collaborative multi-actor sector initiative to increase the impact of research on issues of social relevance, involving all the relevant actors to solve complex challenges. INL takes the discussion on Nanotechnology to Australia

Lars Montelius, INL Director General, will take part as a speaker on a series of scientific events in Australia, highlighting the role of Nanotechnology as a key enabler for a better future. The first one, about Connected Science for the Society, will take place next August 12th, at the Sidney Science Festival, for the general public. During this major event celebrating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics), within the session “Invisible Forces: Changing the World”, Lars Montelius will focus on advances in Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials that are playing a profound role for the last few decades in the development of modern society paving the way for the present Digitalization agec and leading to major societal developments that challenge society. All these changes foster disruptive innovations, which will be subject to reflection and discussion during this initiative where INL is proud to be present. INL showcases nanotechnology developments in Chile

INL presented the latest trends on nanotechnology applied to the food sector in a seminar promoted by Chilean organisation CREAS (Regional Center for Studies on Healthy Food) on how science and technology can help the productive sector to have a better performance. Also, the INL Head of Life Sciences, Lorenzo Pastrana, participated in a meeting with representatives of the Regional Government of Valparaiso to show the collaboration INL-CREAS as a success case, underlining the importance of the public body funding agencies to support the connexion between academy and industry. The initiative, that took place last June 28th and 29th at Valparaiso and Viña del Mar, Valparaíso Region, Chile, also gathered other specialists from Chile and Portugal to discuss how science will play a key role to take innovation to the market.

Little scientists share their experiences at INL

INL and the University of Minho, partners of “Try to Share” Project, developed by Biblioteca Escolar Porto Maia da EB2,3 of Real, aims to allow children to build scientific experiments and lab activities based on the scientific method, defining objectives, material, procedures and conclusions of each experiment. After one year of hard work, 110 small scientists from Real School Grouping set up a conference in the INL garden – Outdoor Lab – where they presented posters, made scientific demonstrations and answered questions from the audience. To finish the day, the little scientists plant a tree in INL’s garden to symbolise a seed for education. This event was also scheduled for the World Humanist Day to celebrate the first year of the project.

CLIB students win entrepreneurship competition with INL support

A team of students from CLIB – Colégio Luso Internacional de Braga recently won the 11th National Competition, promoted by Junior Achievement Portugal, the Portuguese chapter of the oldest organization in the world promoting education for entrepreneurship. The five 10th graders – four girls and one boy -, mentored by INLer João Piteira, will represent Portugal in the European Competition, that will take place next 16th to 19th of July in Belgrade, Serbia, with the mini-company “Extinctus Enterprise”. This project was inspired by the response to the tragic forest fires that hit Portugal in 2017. The technology prototype, developed with INL support, is an underground Ignis Capsule containing a radio, a battery and a temperature sensor. In case of fire, it detects the heat and sends a signal to firefighters. Another CLIB team – also from the 10th grade – mentored by INLers Dmitri Petrovykh, Cláudia Sousa and Eurico Moreira, got the second place in the same competition with the SOS – Seniors On Surveillance project, for developing the concept of a high-tech Safelet bracelet equipped with alert buttons and sensors to promote independence, autonomy and safety for senior citizens. Portuguese and Spanish students learn to integrate nanotechnology in medical practice

The INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory and the ICVS – Research Institute for Life and Health Sciences, University of Minho, organized the first Advanced Course on Nano-Bioengineering for Medicine held at the ICVS, in Braga, between May 2nd and 5th, 2018. In the four days of this course, dozens of Master’s and PhD students in Medicine made contact with the foundations and practical applications of nanoscience and nanotechnology in medical diagnostics and advanced therapies. The postgraduate students came from the University of Minho, Porto, Aveiro, Algarve (Portugal), Vigo, Santiago de Compostela, Córdoba, Extremadura and Valladolid (Spain). Nanogateway brings science benefits to Iberian partners. This initiative was open to participants from four regions of Portugal and four regions of Spain, within the framework of the Nanogateway Pluri-Regional Project, promoted by INL and supported by European funds through the Interreg Cross-Border Cooperation Program. This project aims to develop collaborative research excellence and put scientific research at the service of companies and communities covered to support qualified employment and sustainable development. On May 16, the INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory will have the International Day of Light WITH students FOR students at 14h30. The International Day of Light is a global initiative that provides an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy. The broad theme of light will allow many different sectors of society worldwide to participate in activities that demonstrate how science, technology, art and culture can help achieve the goals of UNESCO – education, equality, and peace.
